DIY Design for a Coffee Themed-Kitchen: A Plan for Success
Trends come and go, but as long as there is coffee, this theme is likely to be longstanding. Choosing colors, coordinating designs, and pulling it all together without overdoing it will be vital to the success of your coffee kitchen.
Using Your Inspiration
The first step in designing a coffee kitchen is to think coffee! Rich brown, red, taupe, beige, cream, and even black or orange are great color choices. Some people prefer blue tones, which are also very trendy.
Curtains, rugs, and coffee décor are widely available in a variety of colors to complement. After the wall color is chosen, it’s important to choose the design style, such as French café, modern, or country.
Don’t Overdo a Good Thing
After choosing the color palette, whether warm colors (brown, red, taupe, and cream) or a mix of cool and warm (light blue with cream and taupe), the whole room should reflect and compliment the chosen colors.
Be careful not to overdo it by mixing too many styles. The style of coffee-themed kitchens runs the gamut from modern, to French café to a country or traditional, so be sure to choose and stick primarily to one style.
Think about the furniture in the kitchen and in the other rooms in the house. Is it a modern home with modern furniture (blue tones will work better) or is it rustic with country furniture (use the richer shades)? The wonderful thing about coffee designs is that there are many to choose from. It is OK to mix styles, but do it minimally and stick with the style of your home.
Be careful not to overdo the style as too much of a good thing can ruin the design. This is accomplished by using a mix of colors and textures. For example, adding braided placemats will add texture and interest.
Certainly, the cutesy coffee pictures and designs available can and should inspire the colors and style chosen, but it can be very easy (and fun) to get carried away with too many coffee decorations, so think balance and moderation.
Coffee-themed curtains as shown can inspire the design and color choices. Items or colors from the curtains can influence other parts of the room decor, but they are not required to achieve the look. Flowers, tea or coffee pots, and subtle greens, will all enhance and add to a lovely decor without overdoing it. In other words, subtle is best.
Examples of coffee decorations include (it is not recommended to choose all of them):
- A coffee mug as a candle or plant holder
- Coffee plates/ mugs (within the chosen color palette and style)
- A mix of textures for the placemats, rugs, or throw pillows reminiscent of that “cup of Joe.”
- A coffee-colored candle or two
- A few framed coffee pictures
- Complimentary colors or designs as above, such as flowers, subtle greens, coffee canisters, or even a coffee burlap pillow you can make yourself
- A coffee rug
- A few hand towels either within the color palette or with the coffee style chosen
- Coasters in a complimentary color
It’s a Café!
This is the fun part. Think about the functionality of the room. You want to be able to place items without them getting in the way or making the room look cluttered. So, consider shelving space and wall space. Well thought out and placed objects are vital to the success of your personalized café.
A restaurant-style coffee cup placed next to a red plate for example will create eye appeal. This is going to take some standing back, rearranging, and trial and error until the colors and objects flow well. Take your time and sip on a warm cup of coffee while you do!
Remember to think outside of the box. Using objects from around the home to enhance the theme will create a good flow from room to room. Cushy pillows taken from the living room, for example, and added to a kitchen bench or large chair will add richness to the kitchen. Likewise, pull in the color palette chosen from the kitchen into the rest of the rooms in the house for continuity.
